There is something about a saltwater breeze
that puts all your woes and worries at ease.
There is something about sun-kissed cheeks
that makes you forget the most painful weeks.
There is something about waves crashing ashore
that releases the stress from within your core.
There is something about taking time for self-care
that makes the upcoming year something you can bare.
There were so many times
during the last year
that I asked myself
what did I do
to deserve this?
The answer was nothing.
But today, as I let
the sand squish
between painted toes
and the ocean waves
lick my ankles
I ask myself again
what did I do
to deserve this?
The answer is everything.
Everything that I
have endured
this year
was worth it
for this moment
of re
lax
a
tion.
What a relief
to finally let it all go.
The hours
leading up
to vacation
are some
of the
slowest hours
I have
yet to
experience.
Sometimes when I see
the bright blue skies
and the sun shining
down on me,
I get a smile
on my face
almost as big
as the one I get
whenever I see you.
You laugh
warms my heart
the way
the sun warms
my skin.
I may not be an expert on romance,
but no little gesture is ever too small.
Don’t think I didn’t notice you when
you ordered your side as hush puppies
and gave them to me just because
you remembered how disappointed
I was the last time we were together
and I couldn’t find them anywhere.
That shit belongs right up there
with giving Lady the last meatball.
I am the monster
selfish and swift
that would send you off
into a stage of
forever sleep.
I am the monster
who chose destruction
at my own hand
but yet I still find
the nerve to lay and weep.
Where did I go wrong?
I had dreams fill my head
and in my heart a song
that has gone out of tune
I didn’t fall in love with you…
or maybe just a little in the end.
But I always knew it had to be this way
because our orbits were only
ever meant to cross twice.
We were never meant to stay.
What I didn’t expect was
for you to be sucked in to
a black hole, to disappear
never to be heard from again.
Forever I will be stuck knowing
you are out there, somewhere…
lost in the universe.
